Novel natural therapies for Dogs with Painful Arthritis, Epilepsy & Anxiety

Medicinal Cannabis therapy for Dogs

Medicinal Cannabis has exploded as a treatment option for human patients over the past five years, with reportedly 250,000 prescriptions written, 85% of those since 2020. Cannabis is being prescribed for ~ 150 different conditions most commonly for chronic pain, mental health, epilepsy, and autoimmune conditions to name a few. It is proving to be safe and highly efficacious.

Whilst the adoption of medicinal cannabis as a therapy in pets has not been as dramatic, growing evidence suggest that at a dose of 2mg/kg twice a day, CBD is similarly safe and effective for dogs (see attached studies in products) particularly with painful arthritis and anxiousness. These predominantly oil products do NOT contain THC and so the risk of adverse outcomes is greatly diminished.

What is CBD?

The Cannabis Sativa plant has ~ 500 known chemicals, the two most well-known are major cannabinoids THC and CBD. Whilst THC is sedating and can cause impairment as it binds to the CB1 receptors in the brain, CBD (or cannabidiol) is a chemical that acts predominantly on CB2 Receptors throughout the body as part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell signaling and receptor network that acts to maintain balance and homeostasis within the body and does so through numerous key bodily functions including inflammation, immune function, pain pathway regulation, appetite, growth, stress responses and sleep function. Therefore CBD can have such wide-ranging effects.
